What is the status of the data?
The database is far from complete. We have a lot of old programs and whatnot, but there is a lot that has been lost over time.
- Data by decade:
- 70's - We have about half of the programs, and most of what we have is entered. There are some folders left to go through that might yield a few more programs.
- 80's - We have about 2/3's of mainstage programs, less of other things. We are about 2/3 done entering what we have.
- 90's-present - We have entered almost everything we have. We are still gathering data from a few sources as people come forward with programs. Coverage is generally good for mainstage shows, and less good for other productions.
- Pierrot winners: Only the last few years are entered. Data is suprisingly hard to come by.
- Photos: We plan to upload many more photos. So far, only the 2010's have much coverage. There are many photos available that have not been uploaded.
How does it work?
The site was custom-built from scratch. It is a couple thousand lines of Python code and a few dozen html files served up using the Flask framework. It is hosted on PythonAnywhere and uses a MySQL database.
How come no one did this before?
Someone did! In the late 1990's, Alan Teeple created a database of all shows up to that point. We are greatly indebted to him and his work. Unfortunately, TWH no longer has an electronic version of his data. It only exists in the form of physical binder, which only contains a tiny fraction of his data, which we used extensively. He's still around, and we are working on locating a copy of his raw data.
